Information
some information about
the Peloponnese peninsula, southern Greece |
Blue Sky Studios are
situated in Tolo on the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece,
home to some of the most beautiful and interesting places in Greece
and often overlooked in favour of the well known islands.
This most southern
point of mainland Greece, is classed as an island by the
Peloponnesians. This is due to the Corinth Canal which runs from the
Aegean to the Corinthian Gulf. The Peloponnese is a rugged land that
combines olive and citrus groves, vineyards, mountains and the scent
of the sea, together with countless awe-inspiring ancient sites of
unrivalled beauty, Greek history and mythology.
To relax there is a
haven of pristine beaches, peaceful seaside/fishing villages with
excellent food and local wine. Being separated from the mainland by
stretches of water, this 'island' is joined to the mainland by the
manmade Corinth Canal (Isthmus of Corinth) and the Rio - Antirio
bridge completed in 2004.
The Pelponnesos is said
to be the shape of a maple leaf, but is very much like a hand with
only three fingers and a thumb. By holding your left hand, palm
down, the fingers are the mountainous ridges and between them the
sea gulfs. Laying between the 'thumb' and 'index finger' is the Gulf
of Argolis.
Two clusters of islands
lie off the coast of the Peloponnese coast to the west the Ionian
Islands and to the east the Argo-Saronic Islands.
Home to uncountable
archaeological sites of immense historical importance, some of the
most well known being Ancient Olympia, Epidaurus, Ancient Corinth,
Mycenae, Nemea and Mystras. The Peloponnese - The Land of Gold. |
