Argolida
some information about
the Argolida county on the Peloponnese peninsula, southern Greece |
Blue Sky Studios are in
the Argolida county of the Peloponnese in Southern Greece. The
county covers most of the eastern finger of the peninsula and the
beauty of the Argolis landscape is renowned.. it is adorned by green
fields, olive and citrus groves, forests, mountains, drifting down
to the coastline with numerous glorious beaches and
crystal clear sea, this
combined with the rich variety of archaeological sites of the area
makes the Argolid a must to visit. The major areas of population are:
the capital of Argos (the oldest continually inhabited town in
Europe), Nafplion (the first capital of Greece) and, of course, Tolo
(a popular holiday resort to both Greek and foreign visitors).
From
1600 to 1100BC the Argolida was under the
rule of the Mycenaean's and was the centre of Greece.
A few sites that should
not be missed such as Mycenae or Mykines or Mikine, one of the most
impressive ancient sites in the Argolid. Heinrich Schliemann
excavated here in 1870 and among his finds was the famous 'Mask of
King Agamemnon' made from gold, also know as the 'death mask'.
Another site is Epidavros, set amongst a valley of pine trees,
flowers, olive and orange groves, the theatre dating back to 3rd
century BC and still operating in the high season, showing mainly
Greek ancient dramas, comedy and tragedy and seating up to 14,000
spectators. Alongside the theatre is the sanctuary of Asclepios, the
God of Medicine and it was to here that not only ancient Greeks but
many people from afar came for medication and healing.
Nafplion is home to the
famous Palamidi fortress with a climb of 999 steps to the top, and
is classed as one of the prettiest towns in Greece and just a few
kilometers to Tolo is the Ancient Site of Assini, treasures can be
found all long the coastline as well as inland. The Argolida just
waiting for you to explore it.
As
an alternative, take cruise to one of
the islands of Hydra, Spetses or Poros on daily cruises that leave
the harbour of Tolo through the Summer months. |
