Blue Sky Studios in
Tolo
close to Nafplio
explore the first
capital of independent Greece known as Nafplio, Nafplion, Anapli,
Nauplio, Nauplia and many other names |
Blue Sky Studios in
Tolo are just 10 minutes away from Nafplion, Nafplio being the first
capital of Greece. The venetian influence and occupation is apparent
from the homes, tavernas, shops etc. lining the small narrow alley
ways, with original balconies hanging overhead, taking you back in
time.
Towered by the part
Venetian, part Turkish fortresses, the Palamidi, with the famous 999
steps to the top, built above the city tells you the strategic role
that Nauplia played in Peloponnese history. Another striking feature
of the city lays in the harbour of Nafplion, the Bourtzi, which can
be visited by one of the local boats which will take you for a small
charge. The fortress, built in 1471, has been used as a prison, and
during its time attempts to build a hotel and restaurant within its
walls which have failed.
Nafplio is a colourful
town, attracting Greek and foreign tourists alike, offering a large
assortment of shops, restaurants, tavernas, bars and cafes, these
are found along the sea, harbour front and within the town, all
offering a high standard of Greek cuisine and local wines, seafood
playing a major part on the menu due to the location of Nafplia.
History fans will be in their element as there are several museums
to visit, the newly opened Archaeological Museum in the main square,
Syntagma, the privately owned Folklore Museum, the War/Military
Museum, Art Gallery, Worry Bead Museum and Ouzo museum.
A small train will take
you through Nafplion, and the backstreets where you will see areas
you may normally miss, such as the Lion carved in the rock side
which was dedicated to all the soldiers who gave their lives during
the War of Independence. Nafplio, has so much to offer, you will
return more than once during your holiday for sure. |
